Baie d'Urf, QC, Canada
Residential, Country house: [alterations and additions: ground floor: living room, dining room, hall, kitchen, pantry, servants' hall; first floor: 5 bedrooms, dressing room, 2 servants' rooms]; roughcast; wall bearing

Client: Vivian Dowker
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: What was originally a fairly modest two-storey square house with four rooms per floor, took on another appearance altogether once work was finished on the V. Dowker property in 1912. The house has its main elevation to the south, facing the Saint-Lawrence River. This was left mostly unchanged, save the gallery addition. An extension to the north includes a new kitchen, pantry, servants hall, storage and a back porch. Alterations to the existing core doubled the size of both dining and living rooms. On the first floor, the north addition houses two servants bedrooms, a bathroom and a bedroom. The east addition above the covered porch, supported by rubble piers, provides for two more bedrooms. A new verandah topping a Tuscan colonnade wraps around three sides: the south towards the river; the east, the driveway; the west, the lawn (the north elevation overlooks the road). The roofline was also significantly modified to accommodate the new wings. Walls were finished in roughcast and the roof in wood shingles. This house is still standing today.
