Montreal Street Railway Company Office Building(1/1899)
Sainte-Catherine and Harbor Streets, Montreal, QC, Canada
Transportation, Office building [basement, 2 floors]; brick; wall bearing

Client: Montreal Street Railway Company
Architect: E. Maxwell

Description: The two-storey structure built using brick, wood and steel was brilliantly composed of a wedge-shaped central part to which two lateral wings were attached to give it the form of an ''arrow.'' The symmetrical form of a typical railway terminal station was planned to accommodate office spaces in the west wing and the waiting room in the east. The central wedge part of the building housed the general waiting area. On the upper floor, recreation and reading rooms were designed for office workers. The most important feature of the building was the Victorian-style roofing with a high pitch hipped roof, covering the central portion of the building. Two large secondary roofs, which were also hipped, projected out from the central roof to cover the two wings. All elevation features of the building were elegantly treated with a centred dormer opening in the roof, and a canopy encircling the building at the first floor level to provide shelter.
