John Young Monument(1908) Pointe-à -Callière, QC, Canada Cultural, Memorial Client: Client unknown Description: The Hon. John Young was an engineer whose term as Harbour Commissioner entailed deepening of the shipping channels of the Saint-Lawrence River and the building of the Victoria Bridge. His statue by Philippe Hébert stands near the waterfront today honouring him as the founder of Montreal Port. Mr. Young was also a cabinet member in the Lower Canada Government and M.P. in Ottawa after Confederation. The statue shows him as a benign, frock-coated Victorian gentleman. The Maxwell brothers designed a sober pedestal for the statue, at the base on which he stands is a fountain, the water pouring from an urn held by the Rodinesque figure of a river god, representing the Saint-Lawrence. The monument originally stood in front of the Customs House configuring with the statue a unified composition along the waterfront. The monument was unveiled on October 4, of 1911.
