W.J. Wall House([1908-9]) 571 Landsdowne Avenue, Westmount, QC, Canada Residential, Urban house [basement, 2 floors, 4 bedrooms]; brick Client: Mrs. W.J. Wall Description: In 1908, W.J. Wall hired Edward Maxwell to design his urban house on Landsdowne Avenue, Westmount. The result was a brick house of two storeys. The plan follows Maxwell’s formula from the end of 19th century, which consists of an asymmetrical layout with a central stair-hall as the organizing principle. The drawing room, dining room, and butler’s pantry rooms disposed surrounded the core. The second floor contains four bedrooms. The façade shows a simplified version of the Queen Anne style. Edward suppressed the exterior decorative elements of the house to permit an elegant expression of the brick. Holdings: Urban house (basement, 2 floors, 4 bedrooms); brick | |
