Client: E.M. Renouf
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: Col. Edward Michael Renouf was born in Saint-John’s, Newfoundland in 1860. He became an important bookseller and publisher. In 1881, he joined Dr. S.E. Dawson, whom he eventually succeeded in business. In 1909, Renouf engaged the Maxwell brothers to make some addition and alterations to his store located on McGill College Avenue. The existing building consisted of a two-storey steel and stone structure composed of three bays of 24 feet wide. The alterations were related to an excavation on the basement floor for storage purposes, re-configuration of the ground floor, and a new mezzanine for the two stores. The elevations show the solution by the Maxwells for this type of building consisted of a double-height ground floor and large planes of glass, interrupted only by stone pilasters and the recessed entrances for each store facing McGill College Avenue. Well-proportioned windows for the offices and stone for the exterior finishing differentiated the upper levels, which were crowned by an elaborated wood cornice. Particularly, interesting was the design for the front door of each store that consisted of small floral ornaments, a wood pediment, and a hinged grill to permit cleaning of the glass.
