Walter J. Ray Six Houses(1907) Grande Allée Street, Quebec City, QC, Canada Residential, Urban house [triplexes, basement, 2 floors and 6 bedrooms each]; brick and stone; wall bearing Client: Walter J. Ray Description: In 1907 the Maxwell brothers designed six houses for Mr. Walter J. Ray. The project consists of two groups of houses each one located on an adjacent block. Each group is a composition of three attached houses. Although the plans were reflected, the architects included small variations, both on plan and elevation in order to avoid an image of repetition.
The elevations show architectural elements borrowed from the French Château style. A distinctive feature is the front bay window for each house, which is projected and capped with half-hipped roofs. Cut stone surrounds and a semicircular arch for the front window of the centre house emphasize the openings.
The layout for the six houses consists of identical L-shaped plans. The entrance for each house is located at one side with a lobby that leads to the hall. This space opens onto the front drawing room and the library. In the rear extension, the architects located the kitchen and dining room. The first floor contains six spacious bedrooms with two bathrooms. Holdings: Urban house (triplexes, basement, 2 floors and 6 bedrooms each); brick and stone; wall bearing | |
