Protestant Insane Asylum Nurses’ Home(11/1915-7/1916)
Verdun, QC, Canada
Health, Hospital [basement, 2 floors]; brick; composite

Client: Protestant Insane Asylum
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: In 1915, the Maxwell brothers designed the Nurses’ Home for the Protestant Insane Asylum. The elevations show a simple, two-storey high brick building with a heavily elaborate Beaux-arts entrance, including a decorative garland, Corinthian columns, and a parapet with sandstone pinnacles identifying the central axis. The symmetrical composition is marked by the two projecting bay windows of the lateral pavilions. Other characteristic elements on the façade of this building are the quoins on the front elevation and the continuous heavy cornice. The layout consists of an H-shaped plan. The central pavilion contains the common recreation room and it is divided into two wings for men and women, respectively. The bedrooms are distributed along a double-loaded corridor.
