Walter Paul Store, Additions and Alterations(4/1913-2/1914)
University Street, Montreal, QC, Canada
Commercial, Residential, Retail store; wood; roughcast; composite

Client: Walter Paul
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: The additions and alterations commissioned by Mr. Walter Paul were related to the enlargement of the ground floor to accommodate a retail store, which consisted of an open space facing University Street. The shipping rooms were placed in the existing structure with direct access from the back lane. The first floor included two apartments, a storeroom with elevator, and stables. A new large skylight between the apartments and the stables brought natural light to the retail store. Other additions included new bathrooms, shipping platforms, screens, new woodwork for the apartments. The elevations show an interesting design as a consequence of the mixed use for this building. The retail level was composed with continuous glass windows interrupted only by cut stone pilasters, while the apartments depicted are small rectangular buildings. Nevertheless, certain uniformity was achieved by means of a continuous ornamented parapet.
