R. McDougall Paterson Cottage (Wanklyn), Additions and Alterations([1904-10])
Senneville, QC, Canada
Residential, Cottage [basement, 2 floors, attic]; wood; composite

Client: R. McDougall Paterson
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: On a large estate in Senneville in 1893, Richard B. Angus built summer residences for his daughters. In 1898, he engaged Edward Maxwell to design a summer cottage that was originally projected for Mrs. F. Wanklyn, formerly Edith Angus. Later, she sold her house to her sister, Bertha and her husband, R. McDougall Paterson. Between, 1904 and 1907, Mr. Paterson commissioned the Maxwell brothers to do some additions and alterations to the existing house. The cottage was designed in a Shingle style with a gambrel roof. It was situated on a plateau overlooking the lake. The original layout contained a spacious dining and living room. These spaces are arranged symmetrically on one side of the house; a protruding circular bay defines the outer corner of the dining room, while that of the living room is octagonal. The additions on the ground floor consisted of an enlargement of the back wing containing the kitchen. The new extension accommodates a new servants’ room, coat room, and a bedroom. The first floor includes a new bedroom with its private bath and dressing room, and two servants’ rooms. The most distinctive feature of this intervention was the new oriel window on the first floor, marking the division between the original house and the addition.
