John Quinlan & Company Contractors House(-) Apartments Sainte-Catherine Street West, Westmount, QC, Canada Residential, Urban house [2 semi-detached, 2 attached, basement and 3 floors each, 12 apartments total]; brick and stone; wall bearing Client: John Quinlan & Company Contractors Description: Two three-storey semi-detached apartment buildings were designed by the Maxwell brothers for the John Quinlan & Company Contractors on Sainte-Catherine West in Montreal. The U-shaped buildings were projected as reflected plans, entered through a vestibule, which led to the central public stair hall. On either side of the stairs, two apartments were accessed from each floor. Each building was designed to accommodate six apartment units giving to a total of twelve units in two buildings. The private entrance hall of a unit gave access to the oval parlor and a small bedroom to its left, which overlooked the Sainte-Catherine Street at the front. To its right, the hall opened onto a dining room and a larger bedroom facing the interior court. The long corridor, which ran into one U-wing, gave access to the two bedrooms and a kitchen. The external façade was rusticated and maintained a symmetrical composition. The two entrances for the two buildings were flanked by two Doric style columns on either side supporting the arched-pediment above, which contained an elaborate frieze. The bay projection of the parlor of each unit ran the entire height of the building and was capped by a sloped roof, above which the gabled parapet crowned the façade. The building survived for many years and was demolished in 1977.
