William Jacobs House, Alterations and Additions(-)
McGill College Avenue, Montreal, QC, Canada
Residential, Urban house [addition: 1 room]

Client: William Jacobs
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: Plans call for a one-story extension to the rear of the existing Jacobs residence. The house included dining room, kitchen, laundry and coal room in the basement; two parlour and a study on the ground floor; two bedrooms, a dressing room and a sitting room on the first floor (probably the masters’ suite) and four more bedrooms on the top floor. The main façade was typical, with a smaller bay containing the entrance porch with the larger bay signalled by a bay window providing lighting to the front parlour. The extension to the rear was either to enlarge the study or the back parlour. Steel reinforcing was also added to the mitoyen wall (parlours), to the main façade and the central partition. This house no longer stands, as all old houses alongside McGill College Avenue have been razed and replaced with office buildings and shopping centres.
