Client: George R. Prowse Range Company Limited
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: The Store & Factory Building for the George R. Prowse Range Company was one of the largest industrial buildings designed by the Maxwell brothers in Montreal. The building was designed mostly for the manufacturing and selling of kitchen ranges. The building typified the Maxwell brothers’ approach to multiple-storey design. The building measured 40 feet in width facing University Street and was divided into three equal bays. The six-storey building with a penthouse at the top was divided into a base, shaft, and a crown, expressing the grid of the supporting steel frame. The ground floor, which was designed for retail, was clearly defined by glazed exteriors and the upper floors, designed for manufacturing goods, were lit by large industrial windows. The building was demolished in later periods due to the new infrastructures in the area.
