Town Houses

Like the single family detached house, the town house, too, complements the basic social unit, the family, and, although attached to its neighbors, its boundaries are well defined in terms of ownership. The Town house is also ground related, with easy access from the home to the garden or backyard, but, naturally these outdoor extensions are more limited in size. Smaller outdoor spaces however are more manageable and therefore preferred by some, especially the elderly. Traditionally, town houses are also street oriented, and with its outward orientation come some social implications not unlike those associated with single family detached houses: residents who care who their neighbors are (Schoenauer: 1994).
