HUGH ALLEN INGLIS VALENTINE: BIOGRAPHY

Hugh Allen Inglis Valentine was born in Dundee, Scotland, 1 May 1904. After attending Rosemount School and Montreal High School he entered McGill University in 1923. While at school and university he worked for Ross and Macdonald (1920-27). After graduating with a B. Arch, in 1928, he worked for David R. Brown (1928-31) and William E. Martin of Wilmington, Delaware (1929-30). From 1935 to 1945 he served in the architectural office of the Bell Telephone Company. In 1945 he became a partner of Percy Nobbs until 1950 when he rejoined the Bell Telephone Company as chief architect. Valentine became a member of the Province of Quebec Association of Architects in 1934, served as President in 1957, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. He taught as a sessional lecturer at the McGill School of Architecture from 1959 to 1967. Valentine retired in 1970 and died in 1978.

Hugh Allen Inglis Valentine naît à Dundee en Ecosse le 1er mai 1904. Après des études à la Rosemount School et à la Montreal High School, il entre à l'université McGill en 1923. Pendant ses études, il travaille pour l'agence Ross et Macdonald 1920-27. Après avoir obtenu un bac. arch, en 1928, il travaille pour le compte de David R. Brown (1928-31) et de William E. Martin de Wilmington au Delaware (1929-30). De 1935 à 1945, il travaille à l'agence d'architecture de la compagnie Bell Téléphone du Canada. En 1945, il s'associe à Percy Nobbs jusqu'à 1950, année où il réintègre la société Bell Téléphone en qualité d'architecte en chef. Valentine devient membre de l'Association des architectes de la Province de Québec en 1934, en assume la présidence en 1957 et est élu membre de l'Institut royal d'architecture du Canada. II enseigne des cours saisonniers à l'École d'architecture de McGill de 1959 à 1967. Valentine prend sa retraite en 1970 et meurt en 1978.
