When they first arrived at Habitat in 1968, the couple purchased a modest three-bedroom unit.
Twenty-one years later, they supplemented their original residence with a two-bedroom unit
situated above their own. Shortly thereafter, they added another three-bedroom residence,
expanding their home over four levels and to a total of 16 rooms (5,000 square feet),
including five bedrooms, a large snooker room, two solariums and the same number of
patios. At Habitat, where none of the interior walls are load-bearing, most
non-structural changes are permitted, allowing residents to re-arrange the
internal configuration of their modules to suit their personal tastes and
lifestyles.
Breaking through the concrete walls between the apartments
was pure hell, recalls the resident in an interview with Gazette editor
Annabelle King. It took months to cut through and to build the staircases.
