Low Density Housing System
Project Title
Low Density Housing System
Description
This project was an industrialized construction system intended for single family, town house and low-rise multiple dwelling. It was developed for two sites in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and in Washington DC, though only a few sketches were developed for the Washington proposal, while the Puerto Rico scheme was developed in greater detail. Safdie modified the shape and the grouping of the modules used in Habitat '67 to conform to the more specific requirements of low-density housing. In developing this system, Safdie was concerned with three main issues: ensuring the units' proximity to the ground, emphasizing economy in production and erection, and making the most of the land.
