Miss Olive Hosmer House(1923) 693 Mountain Street, Montreal, QC, Canada Residential, Urban house [basement, 3 floors,]; brick; wall bearing Client: Miss Olive Hosmer Description: Miss Olive Hosmer was the daughter of Charles Rudolph Hosmer and Clara Bigelow. The Maxwell brothers were commissioned to design an urban house for Olive since Edward had designed magnificent houses for her father, one at 3630 Drummond Street [now 3630 Sir William Osler Promenade (106)] in Montreal, and the other at 130 Prince of Wales Street in Saint-Andrews, which is called Hillcrest (451). The drawing in the archive shows that the Maxwell brothers designed a large mansion for Miss Olive Hosmer on Mountain Street. The house featured the same steeply pitched roofs with gables, turrets, bow windows and piazzas reflected the design of Hillcrest and Meadow Lodge (622). The composition of the south elevation where the main entrance was located, featured a central gabled eave projecting from the pitched roof. The porch, sheltering the entrance doorway, served as a balcony on the first floor. The house was entered through a small vestibule, which led to the central hall giving access to the library to its east. The drawing room next to the library was also entered through the hall, which had a staircase towards its east. The back of the hall opened onto the dining room, linking to the kitchen. The kitchen was designed as a secondary wing to the west corner of the northern façade and was connected to the main wing by means of the pantry. The upper floor of the house accommodated four large bedrooms and a sewing room in the main wing, and three maid’s rooms in the secondary wing.
