C.F. Smith House (Rosemount)(1907-09)
148 Prince of Wales Street, Saint-Andrews, NB, Canada
Residential, Country house [basement, 2 floors, 5 bedrooms, 4 servants' rooms]

Client: Charles Francis Smith
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: In 1907, Charles Francis Smith, born in 1841, was the Director of the Victoria Life Insurance Co., the Merchants Bank, and the President of the Montreal Board of Trade. He asked the Maxwells to design a residence for him in Saint-Andrews. Rosemount is a fine example of the combined styles of Edward’s curvilinear detailing and William’s symmetrical discipline. Above the entrance portico supported by rusticated stone pillars, three eyebrow rooflines descend in increasing width. The front façade is symmetrical with the verandah wrapping around the house on one side. Double entrance doors with tall transoms and wide glass lead into a well-lit living-hall that articulates the living room, dining room, bedroom, and an octagonal den projecting into the tower bay at the rear of the house. In an adjoining small block the architects located the service rooms which contain the kitchen, servants’ hall, and children’s dining room. Certain details like the mantle, the pilasters and the stairway balusters are decorated with carved hearts. One distinctive fact about this house is that Mr. Smith requested that the Maxwell brothers design the interior as well as all its furnishings.
