Residential, Country house

Client: Charles Meredith
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: Mr. Charles Meredith was born in London, Ontario. He married R.B. Angus’ daughter, Elspeth Hudson Angus, living at 1130 West Pine Avenue (518), Montreal. He was a stockbroker and financial agent for the Bank of Montreal, the Montreal Stock Exchange (537). In 1897 Edward Maxwell was invited by Meredith to design some additions and alterations to his country house Bally Bawn, at Senneville. The previous owners, the Sulpicians built a library on the site in 1750. In 1864, major additions and Gothic Revival ornamentation were added to the traditional structure for the then owner Christopher Abbott. In 1897, Charles Meredith bought the house and asked Edward Maxwell to extend it by adding a large verandah to the eastern end and a servants’ wing. The roofs were altered to make them uniform in design. A Gothic portico was also built. A few years later in 1902, Edward with his brother William made further alterations, adding a large drawing room, bathrooms, and relocating the staircase. Finally, in 1909, the architect Robert Findlay added a new wing, which gave Bally Bawn its present size. Bally Bawn is now an impressive country residence marked by three high gables. Its façades are enhanced by Victorian ornamentation, which contribute to their elegance without being heavy; broad projecting windows; large terraces leading to the lawns; Queen Anne chimneys; decorative wooden verge-boards following the roof lines; and generous windows with many, small panes. Hidden behind the estate’s foliage, amidst many flowerbeds, was a tennis court, garage, cottages for the chauffeurs and gardeners, henhouses, greenhouses and various other auxiliary buildings.
